Foot passenger ferry will benefit Nanaimo families and businesses
Province identified the infrastructure priority, Ottawa needs to deliver
Nanaimo-Ladysmith candidate Bob Chamberlin is calling on the federal government to move promptly on providing financial support for a much-needed foot passenger ferry service between Nanaimo and Vancouver.
In a letter to Infrastructure Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Chamberlin said he has talked to “hundreds of people who invariably agree that harbour to harbour ferry service would be of significant value to families, to local businesses, and to the economic development of the mid Island region.”
Chamberlin noted the provincial government has identified the harbour-to-harbour ferry service as a top priority for infrastructure funding. He applauded MLA Sheila Malcolmson, the former MP for Nanaimo-Ladysmith, for her leadership on the issue.
“As MP for Nanaimo-Ladysmith, I will follow through on Sheila’s leadership for this ferry service,” he said. “She worked tirelessly with the federal and provincial governments to get all the pieces in place. Now we need the Federal government to deliver, and I will work to ensure that happens.”
Here's the text of Chamberlin's letter to the minister:
Dear Minister Champagne,
Greetings from Nanaimo-Ladysmith.
I am writing to follow up on the need for foot passenger ferry service between downtown Nanaimo and downtown Vancouver. As you know, the provincial government has identified this project as a priority for funding under the New Building Canada Fund.
As the NDP candidate in the federal by-election, I have talked with hundreds of people who invariably agree that harbour to harbour ferry service would be of significant value to families, to local businesses, and to the economic development of the mid Island region.
I know that our previous Member of Parliament, Sheila Malcolmson, has spoken to you about the importance of the project, and continues to be a champion as a provincial MLA.
I am very hopeful that your government will respond to the priorities identified by the BC government, will work with local First Nations consistent with the United Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People, and will deliver funding to this much-needed project as soon as possible.
A passenger ferry service between Nanaimo and Vancouver would be invaluable for our community.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Chief Bob Chamberlin
